Pinkney, who was born in Dalzell, South Carolina was not a member of the original lineup of the group, but he did join the group early on and often was regarded as the "Last Surviving Original Drifter."
He was credited with creating the Drifters unique sound and the group has had a strong influence on the direction of soul music, rhythm and blues, and rock and roll.
