Sept. 8: Sal Valentino lead singer for The Beau Brummels is 68 today.

Born Salvatore Willard Spampinato near San Francisco, he is best known as lead singer of The Beau Brummels, subsequently becoming a songwriter as well. The band released a pair of top 20 U.S. hit singles in 1965, "Laugh, Laugh" and "Just a Little."

While a certified member of the San Francisco music scene - which included Jefferson Airplane, the Grateful Dead, We Five, Moby Grape, Quicksilver Messenger Service and Country Joe and the Fish -  they picked the name "Beau Brummels" since it sounded British.

Sal later fronted another band, Stoneground, which produced three albums in the early 1970s. After reuniting on numerous occasions with the Beau Brummels, Valentino began a solo career, releasing his latest album, Every Now and Then, in 2008.

The Beau Brummels were formed in San Francisco in 1964. The band's first was "Laugh, Laugh, followed by another top 10 single "Just a Little." Although the group's commercial success dwindled by the following year, their albums of the late 1960s received critical acclaim.
