Edgar Holland Winter was born in Beaumont, TX. Both he and his brother Johnny were required to take special education classes in high school because of their albinism. If he had a learning disability it didn't affect his ability to master music.
Edgar has mastered many instruments including keyboards, saxophone and drums over a wide range of music styles including jazz, blues and rock. He was most successful in the 1970s with his band, The Edgar Winter Group.
After recording with his brother, Johnny, Edgar was signed to his own Epic Records contract in 1970 and recorded two R&B flavored albums. Edgar's critically acclaimed 1970 debut release, Entrance, demonstrated his unique style and versatility - while always offering a dose of surprise. His recording of "Tobacco Road" propelled him into the national spotlight.

In 1972 he formed The Edgar Winter Group, which included Dan Hartman, former Sawbuck members Ronnie Montrose and Chuck Ruff and later included the band's producer Rick Derringer of The McCoys in place of Montrose.
This band provided Winter with his biggest success, with the album They Only Come Out at Night featuring the #1 hit the instrumental entitled "Frankenstein."
When performed on stage, Winter would show his versatility by playing keyboards, synthesizer, saxophone, and drums during the song.
