Crossroads Guitar Festival 2010 |
Susan was born in Boston, Massachusetts in 1970 and raided in Norwell, Mass. She has always gravitated towards music. Tedeschi began singing when she was four and was active in local choir and theater, and made her first public performance as a 6-year-old understudy in a Broadway musical.
Though raised Catholic, she attended predominantly African-American Baptist churches, feeling the music was "less repressed and more like a celebration of God."
Susan has played in bands since the age of 13. At the age of 18, she formed her first all-original group, the Smokin' Section, in the nearby town of Scituate, Mass. She continued her music studies at Berklee, honing her guitar skills and also joining the Reverence Gospel Ensemble.
She started the first incarnation of her blues band after graduating in 1991, with Adrienne Hayes, a fellow blues enthusiast whom she met at the House of Blues in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Susan has mentioned Bonnie Raitt, Janis Joplin and Boston-area singer Toni Lynn Washington was her most important influences.
